Re: Puch Monza - From San Francisco (USA)
Thanks Toni! It's great to be back. I've been very busy working on my 2005 Derbi GPR, and the 2000 GPR seen in the photo. I did have a set back--about 4 months ago I was crashed by a young woman driving a Honda Civic. I was hurt pretty bad and it's kept me from my normal activities. What I could do in a half day is now taking me five days. : / I'm starting to get better and can do little things again. :D Hopefully I can get the Monza all pretty for San Diego in March. So much to do before then!

Gracias Toni!
For the LA rally last year I forgot my pipe and had to fashion one from an old Biturbo. It was pretty ugly, but it worked well, and I got to ride the rally. That was a blast!

Para el mitin LA año pasado me olvidé de mi pipa y tenía a la moda uno de un Biturbo edad. Fue bastante feo, pero funcionaba bien, y tengo que viajar en el rally. Eso era una maravilla!

Engine Management
For nearly a year now the Monza has been running around with a bad crank bearing. It started to fail in San Diego at the rally--it then went on a couple more rallies. Well it was finally time to take care of that pesky bearing. Time to go to the Paz Center of Engine Rehabilitation.
One thing we discovered was that the clutch discs and plates got seriously hammered. We dressed them up with a file, but they really need to be replaced as soon as I can source some.

Powder Removal Action
In an effort to prep the Monza the powder needs to come off of the wheels. I read that aircraft stripper worked well for removing powder coating. I was unable to find that locally so I tried the strongest pain remover that they had the local hardware store. It took a long time, was messy, and it kind of worked. It turned it into a kind of rubbery mode that separates from the metal, but in areas where the powder was thick (maybe because it was easy to spray there) it was a lot harder to get it to separate, and there are still areas where it didn't. Hopefully this will make it easy to finish up with the sand blaster.
Disc Mod
When Greg and I pulled the disc off of the Monza front wheel we didn't know that the disc was cracked in several places. After I cleaned it up with some HCl I found several cracks. Getting another cast iron stock disc was going to be difficult. It turns out that the rear disc of the of a Derbi GPR is the same diameter as the Monza's front disc--200mm. The issue is the Monza is a five bolt and the Derbi is a six bolt. Another issue is the Monza is offset and the Derbi is flat. I took the bits down to JP and he machined an adapter plate. Here are the results.

Thanks! Most folks around here have the Maxi or the Magnum. Shifter Peds are really rare here in the States because they all had to come in individually. My Monza came home with a solder that was stationed in Spain.
I just picked up some clutch bits for the Monza, however I'd like to find one of these clutches to replace the clutch that's currently in service.

For the want of chrome-moly
In San Diego the frame broke from too much vibration from the engine. So just as the bike made it back on the road, it has to come apart once again...the frame is now at the machine shop getting fixed up. :D

En San Diego se rompió el marco de la vibración excesiva del motor. Así como la moto lo hizo de nuevo en la carretera, tiene que deshacerse una vez más ... la trama se encuentra ahora en el taller de máquinas quedar arreglado. : D

Spain Needs Better Steel
Hey Toni,
Yeah some time ago the right side broke where the exhaust hanger attaches. =8<>
However, my riding style is mostly with my feet on the locked in place peddles--employed like rear sets. : )
It does make me wonder though, because my GPR broke in the same spot, in almost the same way.
